Overview

The Annapurna North Base Camp Trek, also known as the Maurice Herzog Trail, is a hidden treasure in the Annapurna region, offering trekkers a rare opportunity to explore a pristine, less-traveled route. This trail provides an alternative adventure for those looking to experience the raw beauty of the Himalayas without the crowds of the more popular Annapurna Circuit. Rich in history and natural wonders, this trek takes you through breathtaking landscapes, dense forests, glacial rivers, and traditional villages while offering spectacular views of the mighty Annapurna Massif.

This route holds historical significance as it follows in the footsteps of the legendary Maurice Herzog, who led the first successful ascent of Annapurna I in 1950—making it the first 8,000-meter peak ever climbed. Despite its historical importance, the Annapurna North Base Camp remained largely unexplored until 2019, when the Annapurna Rural Municipality (ARM), in collaboration with the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN), the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), and the Ministry of Tourism, took the initiative to develop and promote it.

Unlike the more commercialized trekking routes, this trail offers an unparalleled sense of solitude and adventure. Trekkers will traverse untouched alpine meadows, high-altitude glaciers, and ancient settlements where locals still follow age-old traditions. The journey provides an authentic experience, allowing trekkers to witness the raw beauty of Nepal’s Himalayan wilderness.

Local communities and tourism organizations continue to work on enhancing accessibility and facilities along the trail to make it a sought-after destination for adventure seekers. Whether you're a seasoned trekker or someone looking for a fresh challenge, the Annapurna North Base Camp Trek promises an unforgettable journey through one of Nepal’s most spectacular landscapes.

Trek Route

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Pokhara to Tatopani, followed by an overnight stay in Tatopani

  1. Tatopani to Ghasa – The trek starts with a scenic hike through winding trails, lush rhododendron forests, sparkling rivers, waterfalls, and traditional villages.
  2. Ghasa to Lete – After spending a night in Ghasa, we trek towards Lete, a stunning village surrounded by the Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Annapurna ranges.
  3. Lete to Thulo Bugin – The trek continues towards Thulo Bugin, where we camp near the Miristi Khola, a glacial river that eventually flows into the Kali Gandaki River.
  4. Thulo Bugin to Annapurna North Base Camp – A challenging yet rewarding hike across rugged terrain leads us to Annapurna North Base Camp, where we witness breathtaking landscapes and the raw beauty of the Himalayas.

Alternatively, a shorter and less strenuous trekking route starts from Tatopani to Narchyang, which can be accessed via a 5-7 hour drive from Pokhara, depending on road conditions.

The Annapurna North Base Camp Trek is considered a moderate camping trek that typically takes 8 to 9 days to complete. Although it is a lesser-explored trail, it is safe and has immense potential as a future trekking hotspot.

Best Season for Annapurna North Base Camp Trek

The ideal seasons for this trek are:

  • Spring (March–May): Clear skies, blooming rhododendrons, and comfortable temperatures.
  • Autumn (September–November): Stable weather, crystal-clear mountain views, and optimal trekking conditions.

Trekking during the monsoon (June–August) and winter (December–February) is not recommended due to heavy rainfall, muddy trails, leeches, and the risk of landslides or extreme cold.

Permits Required for Annapurna North Base Camp Trek

Trekkers need two mandatory permits:

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Permit – Required for entry into the conservation area.
  • Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) Card – Necessary for tracking and safety purposes.

Himalayan Trekkers can arrange these permits on your behalf once all required documents are submitted. If you have limited time, you may provide the necessary paperwork in advance so we can issue the permits before your arrival.
