The Annapurna North Base Camp Trek, also known as the Maurice Herzog Trail, is a hidden treasure in the Annapurna region, offering trekkers a rare opportunity to explore a pristine, less-traveled route. This trail provides an alternative adventure for those looking to experience the raw beauty of the Himalayas without the crowds of the more popular Annapurna Circuit. Rich in history and natural wonders, this trek takes you through breathtaking landscapes, dense forests, glacial rivers, and traditional villages while offering spectacular views of the mighty Annapurna Massif.
This route holds historical significance as it follows in the footsteps of the legendary Maurice Herzog, who led the first successful ascent of Annapurna I in 1950—making it the first 8,000-meter peak ever climbed. Despite its historical importance, the Annapurna North Base Camp remained largely unexplored until 2019, when the Annapurna Rural Municipality (ARM), in collaboration with the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN), the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP), and the Ministry of Tourism, took the initiative to develop and promote it.
Unlike the more commercialized trekking routes, this trail offers an unparalleled sense of solitude and adventure. Trekkers will traverse untouched alpine meadows, high-altitude glaciers, and ancient settlements where locals still follow age-old traditions. The journey provides an authentic experience, allowing trekkers to witness the raw beauty of Nepal’s Himalayan wilderness.
Local communities and tourism organizations continue to work on enhancing accessibility and facilities along the trail to make it a sought-after destination for adventure seekers. Whether you're a seasoned trekker or someone looking for a fresh challenge, the Annapurna North Base Camp Trek promises an unforgettable journey through one of Nepal’s most spectacular landscapes.
