Overview

The Lower Dolpo Trek is one of the most strenuous, remote, and culturally preserved trekking destinations in Nepal. Lower Dolpo is situated in Nepal’s far western part, within the boundary of Shey Phoksundo National Park. Shey Phoksundo National Park is home to diverse varieties of flora and fauna and is rich in wildlife, including the elusive snow leopard, blue sheep, Himalayan black bear, and various species of birds such as the Himalayan griffon and golden eagles, soaring above the valleys. The journey into this mystical land is famous for its stunning landscapes, including arid valleys and rugged terrain, high-altitude passes, ancient monasteries, pristine natural beauty, and mesmerising Phoksundo Lake.

Shey Phoksundo Lake is one of the most striking highlights of the Lower Dolpo Trek. Shey Phoksundo Lake is valued as a sacred body of water by the local people. The turquoise Shey Phoksundo Lake, surrounded by rugged cliffs and snowcapped peaks, offers a sense of peace and tranquillity to the visitors. Another remarkable feature of this trek is its remoteness, unparallel beauty, sacred monasteries, and unique ancient lifestyle, culture, festival, tradition, religious, and spiritual practices of the local people. This proves the fact why this region is called mystical.

Lower Dolpo Region is inhibited Dolpo-La people. Dolpo-La people are influenced by Tibetan Buddhism and Bon religion. This region is inhibited by traditional Tibetan-like settlements, houses built of stones, sacred monasteries, chortens, and Buddhist shrines. These people have well preserved their culture, ancient way of living, tradition, and nature. You will have an opportunity to interact with local people. Also, gain insight into the lifestyle, religious practices, and rich culture of these people living in harmony with nature.

Lower Dolpo Trekking covers a distance of about 150 kilometres and typically takes around 18 to 21 days to complete. The trek begins at Juphal, as you take a flight from Kathmandu to Juphal. The trek takes you through deep gorges, high ridges, and high mountain passes, including Numala Pass (5,115 m) and Bagala Pass (5,169 m), the highest being the Numa La Pass at 5,190 meters, offering spectacular views of mountains and valleys. Crossing these passes and rugged terrain adds to the difficulty, but the reward is precious. Stunning views of deep canyons, cascading waterfalls, and forested hills that lead to open plains surrounded by snow-capped peaks are simply mesmerizing.

If you are planning to go on a Lower Dolpo region trek, we recommend you be physically and mentally prepared for the challenges you will have to face. There are very limited lodges and tea houses along the route, so many treks are organised as camping treks. The weather is unpredictable, as snowfall and harsh winds are common at high altitudes even during the trekking seasons.

Lower Dolpo Region Trekking is a challenging yet highly rewarding adventure for experienced trekkers. This trek is perfect for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure with moderate difficulty, stunning natural beauty, and deep cultural experiences.

Useful Information

During these times, the weather is generally stable, with clear skies and moderate temperatures. The monsoon season (July to August) brings heavy rain, which can make trails slippery and crossing rivers challenging, while the winter season (November to March) brings harsh cold and snow, making the trek difficult.

The Lower Dolpo Region Trek is classified as a moderate to strenuous trek. While it is less demanding than the Upper Dolpo Trek, it still involves long days of trekking, high altitudes, and crossing several high passes. Trekkers should be physically fit and prepared for walking 5-7 hours a day on rugged terrain. The maximum altitude reached on this trek is 5,190 meters at Numa La Pass, where acclimatization is crucial to avoid altitude sickness.
